January is a big month for us y'all!
- Roman turned 3.
My BABY is 3!!! If you need me, I'll be sobbing while clutching teeny tiny onesies and wondering where the time's gone....
- I turned...older also. Haha.
- And...today is my 2 year Blogiversary!! Woohoo! I can't believe I've had this blog going for 2 years and thousands of people have seen it. It's surreal. And I thank you for being a part of it! In honor of this day, I wanted to share a BIG project we've started on!
Before I tell you about the project, I have a confession to make: I'm a lazy perfectionist.
I try to achieve "perfection" in my home and don't want anyone else to do the work for me because it might not be up to my standards, but at the same time, I don't necessarily feel like doing it all lol. Growing up, I've always kept spaces immaculately clean. I was that kid in school constantly collating my papers and lining up my pencils.
But when you take that type of personality and give it a whole house to care for and put two other people and a cat in that house who are doing their own things, you have to learn to adjust your expectations or you'll drive yourself nuts.
So on that note of changing expectations, I've been feeling like I want to show you my progress on a room in our house start to finish. Not just the snazzy before and after. I mean, we'll get there (hopefully). But I want you to see all the little steps I'm taking in real life to get there. This is hard for me because it means showing you my mess and mistakes and the less glamorous crap that has to happen to get a space you love. And I like the finished space (with collated papers). But I realized that, hey, that's the way things work. And if I want what I share to be useful to y'all, I gotta share it all. The good, the bad, and all the sawdust. On that note...
I've decided the kitchen will be the first room that I work on start-to-finish!
*throws confetti*
*regrets throwing confetti*
*gets broom*
I know, right? That makes so much sense. Like, why not do a closet or something easy to make sure you can actually do it? Nope. Let's pick the biggest, most expensive space. While you have a 3 year old. Good job, Brittany.
Here's a design board I made to give you an idea of where I'm headed with the kitchen aesthetic. By the way, if you would like to know how to make one, let me know in the comments 🙂 We're loving all things modern coastal with some eclectic elements. This beautiful kitchen from Studio McGee is our inspiration! Isn't she beautiful?!
I love the two toned cabinets, the brass accents, light counters, porcelain sink, and light+airy feel this space creates (and if I had an island you KNOW I'd want those gorgeous pendants!). Looking at this kitchen energizes me to get stared on our own!
We've decided that rooms requiring major renovations will be done in two phases:
Phase 1: Inexpensive cosmetic updates to hold us over--paint, new hardware, add some art, etc.
Phase 2: Full reno--complete gut if necessary, replacing floors, knocking down walls, and the like.
The wood floors and marble-look quartz counters from the design board will be part of Phase 2, so it'll be a few years before we're able to do that. But the rest of the elements on the design board will be completed in Phase 1! I'm tackling our kitchen renovation on the teensiest budget I can manage without sacrificing quality or functionality. For Phase 1, I'm giving myself a budget of only $1k for the entire kitchen. And it's no small kitchen.
Here's what our kitchen looks like right now:
For Phase 1, here's my list of projects:
- New light over the sink
- Reglaze the sink
- New sink faucet
- Paint the cabinets
- Replace cabinet hardware
- Paint the counter (no, I'm not crazy! Can't wait to show y'all the plans for this!)
- Paint the tile floors (still not crazy lol)
- Trash can roll out
As y'all might know, the sink faucet and light alone could be my whole budget if I let it, but I'm determined to make this list happen at-or-below my budget! And you guys saw that before picture; my kitchen is NOT little! So if I can do this, you can, too!
What do y'all think? Am I crazy? Have I inspired you to tackle a home reno? Do you have an urge to collate papers?
